Real-Time Magnetometer Data

Live storm readings
where you stand.

Pxie serves real-time magnetometer data from ground stations around the world, turned into a local storm level for any point on Earth rather than a planetary average.

Ground station data is included from the Builder plan.

Coverage: Global, with stations in northern Europe, the United States, New Zealand and Antarctica. Canada is not covered yet. Detail is highest close to a station.

Features

Live magnetometer data, ready to use.

Live magnetometer data

The latest field readings for any station in the network, refreshed every few minutes.

Nearest magnetometer station

Send any location and get up to 10 nearby stations, their distance and current readings.

Local storm level

A storm level for your exact location from the three nearest stations and their quiet-day baselines.

Auroral current strength

Electrojet indices for the northern and southern hemispheres separately.

Where the station network reaches.

Northern Europe

Eleven stations across Finland and Estonia, from north of the Arctic Circle down to the Baltic, give dense coverage of the northern European auroral zone.

United States

Fourteen stations across Alaska, the western and central United States, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Guam. Alaska gives a strong view of the auroral zone, and the stations further south show how far storms reach.

Southern hemisphere

Stations in New Zealand, Samoa and Antarctica. Southern coverage is thin, so southern results are best read as an indication of activity rather than a detailed map.

Canada is not covered yet

There are no Canadian stations in the network at this time, and we are working on adding them. Until then, Canadian locations rely on the nearest stations in Alaska and the northern United States, so local storm levels there are less precise than in Finland or Alaska.

What this means for accuracy

The local storm level uses the three nearest stations, so accuracy is highest close to a station and falls with distance. Send any coordinates to see which stations are used and how far away they are.

Find the nearest station

Send any location and get up to ten nearby stations with their distance and current readings. It is the quickest way to see how close real measurements are to your site, and which stations a local storm level will rely on.

Live readings

Field readings from each station refresh every few minutes, so dashboards and alerts follow a storm as it develops rather than reporting what happened an hour ago.

Who it helps

Researchers who want consistent live readings without stitching networks together, mining and survey crews who want to avoid flying on disturbed days, and grid and pipeline operators who watch for disturbance near their assets.

Who uses it

  • Researchers and universities use consistent live readings without stitching networks.
  • Mining, exploration and survey crews avoid flying surveys on disturbed days.
  • Grid and pipeline operators watch disturbance near their assets.

Magnetometer data questions.

How fresh is the live magnetometer data?

Station readings refresh every few minutes, and each reading carries its own timestamp.

How do I find the nearest magnetometer station?

Send any latitude and longitude and Pxie returns up to 10 nearby stations with distance and their latest readings.

How accurate is the local storm level?

It uses real readings from the three nearest stations against each station's quiet-day baseline, so it is most accurate close to a station.

What does it cost?

Ground station data is included from the Builder plan at $79 a month.

Which regions do the magnetometer stations cover?

Northern Europe, the United States including Alaska and Hawaii, New Zealand, Samoa and Antarctica. Canada is not covered yet and is being worked on.
